As of December 2023, Mariel holds the position of Professor-Investigator Titular D at the Universidad Marista de Mérida (UMM) since 2007. She also serves as an Investigador Nacional Nivel SNI II in the area of Biotecnología y Agricultura for the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores – Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT), Mexico. Mariel has an extensive academic background, earning her Doctorate in Ciencias, Especialidad Ciencias del Mar from CINVESTAV, Mexico, in 2009.
